“Happiness is the state of consciousness which proceeds from the achievement of one’s values.” –Ayn Rand
Values. What are values?
We were going to start by giving you a basic Webster’s Dictionary definition of values but I decided against it. We believe that each person has their own set of beliefs, characteristics, or personal items that they consider to be part of their core values. But what are they?
For this part of the Discovery! Social Media Scavenger Hunt we’re going to look at your personal values to determine which majors and careers would be a good match for you.
What are Texas Tech’s values?
As a Red Raider, you should know that Texas Tech University has its own set of values. Did you know that? We at TTU are committed to the values of:
- Mutual respect
- Cooperation and communication
- Creativity and innovation
- Community service and leadership
- Academic and intellectual freedom
- Pursuit of excellence
- Public accountability
Why is it important to know what your values are?
Like any other part of life, finding the right major and career is all about balance. When you begin the dreaded job search, it is important to understand what values you would be willing to give up for a particular job. For example, you could be a very creative person who is interviewing for a position with virtually very little creative freedom. You could value family and relationships very highly. Yet you find a job that requires many late nights and weekend work. Is it worth it?
How do you find out what your values are?
Now, you may not know what your values are yet. That’s okay! Did you know that there are surveys online that can help you think of and prioritize values? It’s simple. All it takes is a few clicks of a mouse and some contemplation on your part. Our office also has our own version that we’d be happy to send you. Just let us know!
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to discover your values. What do you stand for? What is most important to you? From there, find out which majors, careers, programs, etc. seem to fit with your core values. More importantly, look at your top choice major. Does it align with what you deem important?
If you want to talk more with your advisor about your values and potential majors, we’d be happy to meet with you! Simply call our office at 806-742-2189 and we can help you out.
